Internet of Things

November 21, 2021
The internet of things (IOT) refers to the network of devices connected via sensors, software, and other technology. The purpose of the IOT is to connect devices and exchange data.

One example is the growing number of smart home devices that allow users to monitor and control devices from their smart phones. For example, the Nest smart thermostat has an app that users can download to control the device remotely. There are also smart fridges that allow users to see the contents from the grocery store.

Having smart devices in the home is beneficial for lots of reasons, but introducing devices that are hooked up to the internet is also a potential concern for safety. One huge reason is the potential for hacking that these devices carry. However, even without the threat of a third party hacking, these devices always have the potential to monitor their surroundings without users knowing. For example, there have been instances of Amazon's Echo listening in to homes and recording information without user's consent.
