I worked in collaboration with TraitsAI and the UCSD Design Lab to figure out how to increase the number of patients who have advance directives using an AI chatbot.
I worked with a great team of designers, all from UCSD, to solve this important problem in the healthcare industry.
Only 1 in 3 US adults have a completed advance directive, so we were investigating:
How can we increase the number of people who are prepared for their end of life care?
Given our problem we set out to create an engaging, informative solution.
I personally didn’t have an advance directive, so we started by researching what they look like, how people fill them out, and who introduces them to patients.
After learning that most people don’t have advance directives and attempting to fill one out ourselves, we compiled a list of interview questions to ask both healthcare providers and patients to learn more.
Interviewees were recruited by our project leader, and we made sure to hear diverse voices. We interviewed people of different ages, races, and health statuses.
After hearing from various perspectives and incorporating our previous research, we used our findings to create an empathetic and engaging chatbot.
This included a persona who patients interact with, a dialogue flow we created after learning about conversational design, and a plan for a pilot study which we hope to initiate soon.
We were able to conduct usability testing on our working prototype, and we’ve had to make valuable changes, such as making our language accessible to different generations.
We plan to conduct more usability testing moving forward, this time with a wider audience, including patients in palliative care.
